Malik Ibn Diner (RA) is a responsible deen and a friend of Allah Ta'ala. He earned the Mayarefat of Allah Ta'ala in such a way that even today we remember his name with reverence. I consider his events as a means of guidance. Among his many incidents, I am mentioning an extraordinary incident today.
The incident of Malik ibn Dinar (RA) buying a very valuable maid for two annas.
Once he was passing through a lane in the city of Basra, when he saw a royal maid there. The maid was sitting on a horse, flanked by some slaves. The owner pointed at the maid and said, "O maid! Will your master sell you?"
'Will this old man buy me?' she said
'Will your master sell you?' Malik asked again.
'If he sells, can you afford to buy me?' The girl replied.
'Of course there is! I can afford to buy a better maid than you.'
He smiled, and told his servant to bring Malik ibn Dinar to his house. When the maid came to the palace, she told everything to her master, who smiled and asked to see the owner. When Malik was brought before him, Munib was somewhat impressed by Malik.
'What do you want?' Munib asked Malik.
'I want to buy your maid,' said the owner.
'Can you afford to buy him?'
'He is of no more value to me than two rotten date-palms.'
Everyone present in the room burst out laughing at the owner's words.
'How can his price be so low!' Everyone asked this question mocking the owner.
Malik said, 'Because it has many defects, its value is very low.'
'What kind of error are you talking about?'
'If she doesn't use perfume, her body will smell of sweat.' The owner said, 'If he doesn't brush his teeth regularly, it will look dirty and awkward. If he does not take care of his hair, it will become dry. If he lives a few more years he will become an old man, his skin will fold. He bleeds, he urinates, he has many other defects.
Perhaps, he likes you just for his own sake. Maybe he is not even faithful to you, if you die before him, he will find and like someone else like you.
I can buy a much better maid for less than the price you are asking. I speak of a maid, made of pure camphor; If he mixes the saliva of his mouth with salty and bitter water, it will become sweet; If he speaks to a dead person, the sound of his voice will bring the dead person back to life; If he points to the sun, the sun will lose its light; If he appears at night, the night will be bright; If she looks at the horizon with her clothes and jewelery and adornments, then the whole horizon will be that position. She is the maid, reared among musk and saffron; Who grew up in a beautiful garden, and was milked by the water of Tasnim (the water of Paradise). He will always obey, and His love will never fail. Tell me, which of these maids should be worth more?'
Munib said, 'Surely he is the one you have described.'
'Then know that it is very easy to get him.' The owner said.
'How much is he worth? May Allah have mercy on you.'
'Very few. Stay awake for some time in the night and pray two rak'ahs attentively. When food is brought to you, think of the hungry people, and donate some of your food to them. Remove stones and harmful objects from the path of movement. Spend the rest of your life only on basic needs. Abandon all worldly cares of Fiqh, so that today you may be honored as a moderate and frugal person, and tomorrow you may live in dignity and tranquility in Paradise.'
Munib turned his head towards the maid, and said, 'O maid! Have you heard of this old man of ours?'
'Yes, I heard.' she said
'Did he tell the truth, or just make up stories?'
'No, he told the truth. He gave very good advice.'
Then, Munib said, 'If that is the case then I freed you for the sake of Allah, and gave you such and such property. All the slaves who are with me, I have freed you too, take such and such wealth. I have donated this palace and everything I have in the way of Allah.'
Then he tore a curtain of the room and put it on and threw away his precious clothes. The maid pleaded, 'My lord. I have no life without you.' Then he also took off his expensive clothes and put on shabby clothes. Malik saw them, they went one way, Malik came another way.
